A man and woman seriously injured in an alleged attack at their home have been described as a "nice" couple by neighbours. Police today spent their fourth day at the scene of the incident, which happened in Elswick, Newcastle, on Friday night.

Officers say they were called to a home on Durham Street by the ambulance service who had taken a man and a woman, both in their 60s, to hospital with serious injuries. And today as a man appeared in court accused of attempted murder, neighbours have told the Chronicle of their shock.

Hafiza Begum, 20, who lives nearby said: "It's an old couple and we heard they got attacked. We don't really know them but we see them here and there.

"They are just a normal couple, they are just nice peop
