Editor’s note: This letter is in reference to the White River bridge closure earlier this season and how it could be prevented in the future.

Most of us are aware that garage door openers have the technology to prevent closure on objects in the threshold and parking garages have mechanical feeler gauges of sorts.

Is there not similar technology that could detect an over height truck approaching a bridge placed within a safe stopping distance, tied to an alarm or trigger to activate stop lights before reaching the bridge thresholds from both directions?

I know, cost is a real concern but think if all of us in the thousands who were inconvenienced for so many days spending precious time and money, contributed mere pennies (if pennies are still available), there may well be enough to prote
