Dennis Downey moved this month for the seventh time in his life. But it wasn’t until this go-around that the longtime Pittsburgh resident felt excited about the change or part of a new community, he told a crowd of about 100 people in Oakland on Tuesday morning.

Now, as a resident of Pittsburgh’s first affordable housing complex designed for LGBTQ+ seniors, Mr. Downey said he “won’t have a choice” but to feel a sense of belonging.

“Every time I pull in the garage, walk through the mailroom, walk through the lobby, get on the elevator and walk through the other end of the fifth floor, I have a chance to interact with 50 of my neighbors,” he said.

“That is going to be a huge win for me.”
