Centenary University has chosen a successor to its current president, Dale Caldwell , who will be stepping down before he takes office in January as New Jersey’s next lieutenant governor.

Incoming president John R. Schol served as bishop of the United Methodists in Greater New Jersey for more than a decade before retiring in 2024, the private university in Warren County said in announcing his appointment Tuesday.

Schol will begin a two-year term as Centenary’s 16th president on Dec. 1, the university said.

He has served for 10 years on Centenary’s 19-member board of trustees. The university is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
