A grandfather left unable to walk following a fall in Croatia is set to embark on a gruelling 30-hour journey back to the UK this week for continued medical care.

Brian Ackroyd has spent a month in hospital in Dubrovnik after sustaining severe injuries including a fractured skull and a broken C2 vertebrae.

The father-of-three, from Teesville, also endured nerve damage and three brain bleeds after falling in Cavtat on the first morning of his holiday.

Following several days in intensive care, the 65-year-old is currently receiving treatment on a neurology ward at Dubrovnik General.
