JAMES ISLAND — The town is taking steps toward adding more housing stock and affordable housing opportunities by allowing accessory dwelling units to be built within town limits.

Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are smaller, separate living spaces on the same property as a single-family home and must include both a bathroom and kitchen. Previously, there was nothing in the town’s code regarding ADU regulation, but Town Council approved language that would allow older ADUs to legally become part of the homeowner’s property.

James Island Town Council unanimously approved amendments to the town’s zoning ordinance to include language defining ADUs and nonconforming ADUs — units that were built before 2012 and no longer meet the town’s density standards — at their Nov. 20 meeting.
