A Long Branch police officer is being honored after he rescued a man from a burning home, his department announced Tuesday, Nov. 25.

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, officer Ivan Guzman responded to a fire at 869 Van court Ave., where  he encountered heavy smoke coming from the second floor, Captain Jorge Silverio said.

Without hesitation, Guzman made entry into the residence and learned a man was trapped upstairs, Silverio said. Despite being met with intense smoke, low visibility, and dangerous conditions, he made multiple attempts to reach the man each time retreating only when physically unable to continue, Silverio said.

Guzman soaked an article of clothing to shield himself from the smoke, pushed forward, found the elderly man and physically removed him from the residence, Silverio said.

The man sustained significant burns and smoke inhalation, surviving only because of Guzman's "determination, bravery and refusal to give up," Silverio said.

"His conduct that evening reflects the highest standards of heroism, professionalism, and dedication that define this department," Silverio said. "Officer Guzman’s willingness to risk his own safety to save a life brings great credit to himself and to all of us who wear this badge."

Guzman will be honored at a City Council meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

"Outstanding work, Guzman," Silverio said. "You make this department proud."
