ANN ARBOR, MI — The number of budgeted teaching positions in Ann Arbor Public Schools has fallen by roughly 9.4% in the last two years as the district continues to downsize staff in the long wake of the 2024 $25 million budget shortfall.
But now, administrators say the reduction isn’t because of layoffs . Instead, it’s through attrition — all part of a strategy to “right-size” staffing, they said, while taking steps to recruit and retain teachers where they can.
“We’ve really remained diligent in right-sizing our staff,” Shonta Langford, AAPS’ assistant superintendent for human resources, said Monday, Nov. 24.
