NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - People have raised privacy concerns over data collected by license plate readers used by law enforcement for investigations.
In Nacogdoches County, license plate readers have been used for the past five years. Sheriff Jason Bridges said the data is stored on a cloud service, which also can be accessed by federal and state agencies.
“Once the data is there, it’s there. From my understanding, it’s there forever unless it’s purged or deleted,” he said.
The commissioners court approved an agreement with TxDOT on Nov. 25. It included a modification to better protect data stored by the readers. Bridges said they have not run into problems over the years. The devices are mounted on patrol units and set up in trailers near highways.
