EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Evansville Police say the officer involved in the shooting last Saturday on E. Louisiana Street is Officer Nicholas Helfert.

He’s been with the department since November 2021. He worked with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office for two years prior.

Police say they are releasing Officer Helfert’s name because they are committed to transparency.

Police say he was holding a device made to look like a gun when Helfert fired at him.
