SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - SimpliSafe estimates 250,000 packages are stolen in the U.S. every day.
Homeowners have responded with bait packages that explode with glitter, powder, dye bombs, and foul smells when opened by thieves. While these viral videos can be entertaining, attorney Grant Rahmeyer, of Rah Law, warns that homeowners could face criminal charges and financial liability if someone gets hurt.
“Setting up a booby trap is generally always considered illegal,” Rahmeyer said. “It’s a risky thing to do is what I would tell your viewers. Cause if you do. If you hurt them with a booby trap, you absolutely can get in trouble.”
