While testing for chronic wasting disease is mandatory in some provincial zones, it remains a personal choice for hunters in the Weyburn area, although conservation officers highly recommend taking the extra step.

Lindsey Leko, a senior conservation officer in the Weyburn area, says that while there is no requirement to submit heads locally, the province provides free testing for those seeking peace of mind.

"It's totally up to the hunter," said Leko. "The department encourages everyone to get their deer, their elk tested just to play it safe."

Hunters wishing to participate can access drop-off centres at the Weyburn Wildlife Federation, located south of the city, or at the Regina field office.
