A new colour-coded alert system will streamline weather warnings, helping people quickly gauge the severity and risks of extreme conditions at a glance, says Environment and Climate Change Canada .

The system launched Wednesday as weather warnings and alerts for snow squalls and strong winds went out across a wide swath of southern Ontario.

The federal agency said in a news release the system is part of its ongoing modernization and aligns with worldwide best practices, including those promoted by the World Meteorological Organization.

Meteorologists now use an alert colour matrix that combines the latest atmospheric data — weather models, real-time observations and forecast confidence — with new impact guides to describe how a weather event may affect people, property and communities
