Several people were taken to the hospital after a shooting in Stockton, California, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.

Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee said in a statement a "mass shooting" took place at a child's birthday party, but law enforcement officials are yet to confirm how many people were shot or what led to the shooting.

The shooting is still under investigation and the scene is still active.

The scene is near a Dairy Queen, where several agencies have responded.

It is unclear how severe the victims' injuries are.
