A report of a person who jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge led to an hour-long search effort in the Hudson River.
The call came in around 11:40 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, Nov. 28, according to the Piermont Fire Department.
Crews from Piermont, along with several police and fire departments, were dispatched to the scene, in addition to Piermont’s marine unit which responded with eight divers and three additional team members.
Once on the river, responders coordinated with command staff to determine where the victim had entered the water. Using that information, the crew deployed side-scan sonar and began a grid search to the southwest of the bridge, following the tide.
Agencies continued searching for several hours, but New York State Police ultimately ended the operation without locating the person.
The Piermont Fire Department extended condolences to the family of the missing person.
The new Tappan Zee Bridge's official name is the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. The old bridge's official name was the Gov. Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge.
