MONROE, La. (KNOE) - On Dec. 1, 1824, it became clear that none of the four candidates for president would receive the needed number of electoral votes to be elected.

John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson were the two top contenders.

The decision was then sent to the U.S. House of Representatives in accordance with the 12th Amendment.

Their vote in February selected Adams as president, even though Jackson had received the most popular and electoral votes from the people.
