Algoma Steel has issued 1,000 layoff notices.

The layoff notices will be effective March 23, 2026 and are a combination of the transformation to Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking and the effect of tariffs.

The transformation process timelines has sped up as a result of the unprecedented tariffs imposed by the United States, significantly affecting the steelmaker.
