A strategy to address crime and social dysfunction in the downtown core has continued to yield results, including a sharp decline in open-air drug use and fewer break and enters, police are reporting.
Greater Sudbury Police launched what it calls the Support First Initiative for 360 Community Safety in the first week of November, with the goal of reducing open drug use through a compassionate, community-based approach.
“The Support First Strategy prioritizes connecting individuals experiencing addiction with vital support services such as housing, food and treatment before considering enforcement,” the police service said. “Arrests are reserved for cases where individuals repeatedly decline assistance, are non-compliant and pose a significant risk to public safety.”
