As the calendar flips to December, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has launched its annual Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign in an attempt to curb impaired driving through the holiday season.

RIDE checkpoints will be set up throughout Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township as part of the enforcement and education push aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road.

Sault police has partnered with the OPP, Anishinabek Police Service, Batchewana First Nation Police, and the RCMP to carry out the checks, which began in November and will continue until Jan. 1.

Last year, officers from all participating agencies stopped roughly 700 vehicles during the campaign. The checks resulted in one impaired-driving criminal charge, two seven-day licence suspensions, one 14-day su
