(WBTV) - Travelers who do not have a REAL ID may be required to pay a fee in order to fly starting in 2026, the Transportation Security Administration (or TSA) announced Monday .

Starting on Feb. 1, 2026, passengers who cannot provide a TSA-approved form of identification may pay a $45 fee to use TSA’s modernized identity-verification system, TSA Confirm.ID . Acceptable forms of identification include a passport, state-issued driver’s license, permanent resident card, and more, according to the TSA .

The new technology will verify a traveler’s identity at security checkpoints and remain valid for 10 days. Officials said the process will vary by airport, and the TSA is working with private industry to offer online payment options before passengers arrive.
