Springdale, circa 1910: By 1880, so many apples were grown in Northwest Arkansas that the means to haul the fruit was exceeded and many were left to rot. This all changed with the coming of the railroad, and soon more than 60,000 acres of apple orchards in Benton and Washington counties were shipping barrels of apples as far as Canada. Local farmers were bringing in their output for packing in a long line of wagons.
