A female correction officer was assaulted inside Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers. The attack happened during a routine security check at the all-male facility.
Officials said an inmate began choking and punching the officer in the face without warning. Staff rushed in and restrained him. He was moved to the Restrictive Housing Unit at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution, state officials said.
Authorities have not released the inmate's name.
AFSCME Local 391 told NBC Connecticut that the attack was an attempted sexual assault. The union said the inmate was serving 20 years for other sexually related crimes. The union said the inmate dragged the officer into a camera “dead-zone,” where security cameras cannot see.
Union officials said the officer suffered a fractured eye socket. They said she also had scrapes and bruises on her upper body and face, the report continued.
The Department of Corrections said the officer was taken to the hospital. She was treated and released.
Connecticut State Police and the Department of Correction are investigating. No other details have been released.
