CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Albertina Domingo-Diaz stood in the cold and snow Tuesday morning outside the Cedar Rapids Homeland Security building, facing her annual immigration check-in with more fear than ever before.
Three months ago, her husband was detained and deported back to Guatemala, leaving her to care for their four children alone.
“This year is so different, I’m so much more fearful, I was scared to go inside, especially because I have four kids at home,” Domingo-Diaz said.
She was among roughly 20 Escucha Mi Voz members and their families who waited for their appointments Tuesday morning. The group included toddlers and babies. No one was detained during the check-ins, as dozens of people came to support the families.
