Newark’s two large public universities have shared a neighborhood, academic resources and facilities for years. Now the institutions have begun sharing housing, with Talbott Apartments on Bleeker Street occupied by NJIT and Rutgers University-Newark students.

With the demolition of NJIT’s Oak Hall, more than 200 upper-class students moved this fall into

Talbott on Rutgers’ campus as part of a housing agreement between the two universities. The partnership is expected to last until spring 2027, depending on the availability of space in the building.

The transition was difficult, at first, for New Jersey Institute of Technology staff and students, but they are adjusting, said Talbott Coordinator and NJIT alum Shamier McKenzie.
