WATERLOO, Iowa — The race for the Ward One City Council seat in Waterloo is in runoff between incumbent John Chiles and former council member Steve Schmitt.

In the initial vote, Schmitt led by 87 votes, but neither candidate reached the necessary 50 percent plus one vote threshold needed to win in the November election.

Chiles, currently serving on the city council, emphasized his diverse service experience within the community.

"I've served in various other capacities throughout the community," Chiles said. "All of the experience gained serving on various boards and these various places have given me more knowledge on how the government is supposed to work."
