FORT MOHAVE, AZ (AZFamily) — An 8-year-old boy was arrested Monday after deputies say he brought a loaded handgun to Fort Mohave Elementary School in northwestern Arizona and threatened a teacher.
The incident is intensifying an ongoing debate in the state over disruptive classroom behavior and how students should be disciplined.
According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, the child pointed the gun at a teacher before handing it to another student. Staff intervened, disarmed the child and removed him from the classroom. The student is facing multiple felony charges, including misconduct involving weapons, disorderly conduct, minor in possession of a firearm, interfering with an educational institution and threatening/intimidating.
