Gov. Phil Murphy has called on the Indian government to cooperate with U.S. authorities in extraditing a suspect in a brutal 2017 killing in Burlington County.

Murphy said Tuesday that he spoke with Indian Ambassador Vinay Kwatra last week about cooperating with U.S. authorities to extradite Nazeer Hameed, 38.

Hameed is an Indian national who was charged with killing a mother and her son in a Maple Shade apartment eight years ago.

“This heinous crime shocked our state, and for eight years investigators pursued every available lead,” Murphy said in the letter. “It is our understanding that Mr. Hameed is presently residing in India, having departed the United States shortly after the murders occurred.”
