Spokane, Washington – Darren Bowannie, a former corrections officer, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for sexually abusing an inmate in federal custody, the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Washington, said in a release.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on February 9, 2024, when Bowannie, 35, was transporting a female inmate from Wellpinit to the Colville Tribal Correctional Facility in Nespelem.
During the transport, Bowannie pulled over and sexually assaulted the restrained inmate. The victim reported the assault upon arrival at the facility, prompting an FBI investigation.
The investigation revealed Bowannie’s DNA on the victim, confirming her account. Despite Bowannie’s initial denial, evidence corroborated the victim's claims.
