The son of a detective who was stabbed to death more than 40 years ago has been calling on the UK government to recognise his fathers bravery. Detective Sergeant Ross Hunt died after being murdered by three members of the same family in Larkhall, Lanarkshire , in 1983.

His murder happened as he was helping his colleagues arrest Hugh Murray Jr, who was 16 at the time and was suspected of stabbing a man in a pub . Detective Sergeant Ross and his three other colleagues were attacked outside the home of the Murray family in Larkhall just after 1.20am by family members.

Murray Jr stabbed DS Hunt on the chest and stomach with a knife while sitting on top of him. DS Hunt was set to retire in just nine months at the time of his murder.
