CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Two West Virginia-based concrete companies have been sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for allegedly refusing to hire a job applicant because he was taking methadone as part of treatment for opioid addiction.

The EEOC said the companies, Wrightway Ready-Mix, LLC, and Wright Concrete & Construction, Inc., both in Delbarton, asked the applicant about his medications during a job interview. After he disclosed he was taking methadone, a hiring manager and the company’s human resources head told him he would not be hired due to a policy barring workers on methadone, according to the lawsuit.
