McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) -- The U.S. government says a preventative drug is effective in treating New World screwworm infestations in cats, particularly those living on the border.

Late last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization for Credelio CAT (lotilaner chewable tablets)

The agency says "based on the scientific evidence available, it is reasonable to believe that Credelio CAT may be effective in treating New World screwworm infestations in cats and kittens," according to a statement.

The New World screwworm has been spotted as close as 70 miles from the South Texas border in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, south of Laredo, Texas.
