Shredded cheese sold by major retailers, including Walmart and Aldi, in more than 30 states has been recalled after the manufacturer discovered the products may contain metal fragments.
Great Lakes Cheese Company initiated the recall for its shredded cheese on Oct. 3.
On Dec. 1, the action was officially rated as a Class II recall , by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This classification means the product could cause minor, entirely fixable health issues, and the risk of serious health issues is low.
In total, 263,575 cases of cheese are being recalled, the bulk of which is for low-moisture part-skin mozzarella shredded cheese.
The recall covers several product types:
Low-moisture part-skim mozzarella shredded cheese: 235,789 cases
Italian style shredded cheese blend: 15,4
