New population projections from Statistics Canada suggest a significant demographic shift is coming to southeast Saskatchewan, with Weyburn positioned as the region's primary stabilizer while other communities face potential declines.

Data released Nov. 28 outlines three growth scenarios for communities across the province over the next 25 years. While the province’s major growth is concentrated in the Saskatoon region, the models show a diverging path for the southeast’s two largest cities.

Under the federal agency’s medium-growth scenario, considered the most likely baseline, Weyburn is projected to grow by roughly 13 per cent over the next two decades. The model suggests the city’s population could rise from its current estimate of 11,641 to roughly 13,200 by 2049.
