A prisoner claims “voices” told him he was about to be attacked by another inmate who he then scolded with boiling water.
Jamie Donaldson is accused of throwing the scolding water from a kettle at another inmate at HMP Durham, on April 10, this year.
The 36-year-old defendant, from South Shields, appeared via video link from the prison at a Durham Crown Court plea hearing yesterday (Tuesday December 2).
His counsel, Sam Faulks, told the hearing that the defendant has “a troubled psychiatric history” and it was not the first incident involving him, in the prison estate.”
