A Welsh council is facing the loss of around 600 jobs as Caerphilly councillors are warned to prepare for significant workforce cuts - with no guarantees that compulsory redundancies can be avoided. A senior official reiterated earlier warnings that the county borough council must shrink its workforce amid severe financial pressures.

The authority hopes to limit the impact by not filling vacant posts or replacing workers who retire, but backbench councillors on the authority's joint scrutiny committee were told the move could also mean changes to service delivery.
