BUDA, Texas — The Hays County Sheriff's Office is warning residents not to leave unattended firearms in their vehicles after a spate of vehicle burglaries in the Buda area.
The sheriff's office said burglars appear to be targeting cars with disabled veteran license plates.
Investigators say this is because thieves believe that veteran-owned vehicles have a higher likelihood of a firearm being inside.
Deputies believe this is a regional trend across Hays County.
“Entry into a vehicle with intent to commit a theft still constitutes an offense, even if nothing is actually taken,” the Hays County Sheriff’s Office said.
Anyone whose vehicle was burglarized is asked to make a report in person or online.
