A Killeen man who was facing up to 20 years in prison after shooting a family member in 2024, was sentenced this week to a term of deferred adjudication probation and time-served in the county jail.

Jaelyn Travon Alvarado, 20, told police he did not know the safety of a pistol was off when he fired a “warning shot” at a family member during an argument last year. He was indicted on Nov. 20, 2024, on a second-degree felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. After Alvarado pleaded guilty on Sept. 18, a hearing was held on Monday in the 264th Judicial District Court for the judge to determine his punishment.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Paul LePak heard testimony from the victim, the defendant and seven other people such as law enforcement officers and family members
