DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - A baby boy born in October was safely surrendered under Iowa’s Safe Haven Act, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services said.

The Safe Haven Law is an option for parents in crisis to surrender an infant if they believe they cannot care for the child.

The state said the child will be placed with a foster family until a permanent placement is determined.

This marks the fifth baby surrendered this year and the 79th since the Safe Haven law was created.
