On the fourth day of the Parliament’s winter session, a controversy broke out in the Lok Sabha after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered part of her speech in Hindi.
She was presenting the ‘Health Security to National Security Cess Bill’ and explaining its provisions in Hindi when TMC MP Saugata Roy interrupted.
Standing up, Roy told Speaker Jagdambika Pal, “Nirmala ji spoke in Hindi. I could not understand her because we are Bengalis and do not understand much Hindi.”
In response, the Speaker reminded him that House proceedings are available in multiple languages on the Parliament app.
Roy then replied in Hindi, saying, “We are Bengalis, and we will remain Bengalis.” At this point, the Speaker firmly cautioned him, saying that while it is fine to be Bengali, he cannot speak
