A man has been charged with manslaughter two and half years after the death of a woman. On June 1 2023, 38-year-old Jennifer Smith was sadly found deceased at an address in Birch Grove, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

Today, Cheshire Constabulary said that following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service they had charged Peter Scargill with manslaughter, stalking involving serious alarm and distress and blackmail.

The 48-year-old of Cherry Road, Chester, is set to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court later today, Thursday 4 December 2025.

The force said in a statement: "Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Scargill are now active and that he has a right to a fair trial.
