A man was arrested after threatening a food delivery driver who had paused to pray outside an Island Park home on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m., Nassau County police announced.

Thomas McGarry, 67, was charged following the incident in Island Park, according to Fourth Squad detectives.

Police said the 18-year-old delivery driver had just finished dropping off an order when he realized it was time to pray. He retrieved a prayer mat from his car, placed it on the ground, and began kneeling. While he was praying, a nearby resident allegedly began yelling at him and directing derogatory language toward him, detectives said in the release.

The victim told investigators he explained that he was praying when the man made a violent threat. Officers were notified, and a subsequent investigation led to McGarry’s arrest.

McGarry is charged with Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree and was issued an appearance ticket returnable to First District Court on Dec. 24, police said.
