As hundreds of small businesses and non-profits are set to lose their blue-bin collection, two London politicians want to explore what the city can do to keep more recycling and compost out of the landfill.

Beginning Jan. 1, London will join many Ontario cities where recycling collection is taken over by Circular Materials , a national industry non-profit. Residential pickup won’t change, but 535 small businesses, churches and non-profits on residential routes will lose their recycling service.

The potential added cost for affected groups to contract private recycling pickup is prompting Mayor Josh Morgan and Coun. Skylar Franke to ask staff to examine whether those businesses and non-profits could bring recyclables to city depots – and whether green-bin service could also be added.
