A fire has ripped through a petrol station after a man was allegedly seen wielding an axe.

Footage shows cars and a petrol pump engulfed in flames at the BP Garage in Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire. Nick Lawrence, who lives opposite the station, said he became concerned about his safety and his house as the fire spread. "The smoke was blowing towards the house," he told ITV News . "I thought if the whole garage goes up then there’s potential for something to happen to the house and us."

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police said a man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following the incident on Thursday.
