Law enforcement are reporting an uptick in illegal credit card skimming across the state following the discovery on Wednesday of a suspicious electronic chip inside an ATM at a convenience store in Brighton, police said.
“The Boston Police Department is aware of a recent increase in the use of credit card skimming devices across the state of Massachusetts,” the agency said in a statement.
A technician who was servicing an ATM at a store on Market Street Wednesday evening found the unauthorized electronic chip inside the machine, according to police.
The incident remains under investigation and “serves as a reminder of the methods criminals use to obtain financial information from unsuspecting victims,” police said.
