NEW ORLEANS (WVUE)- As the federal government’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants in the New Orleans area continues, questions have emerged about what immigration agents are legally allowed to do during enforcement actions.
“They do have the right to kind of go in and, just like with any criminal activity, if there’s any kind of suspicion, et cetera, they do have a right to stop someone and ask questions,” said Dr. Ashraf Esmail, a criminologist at Dillard University.
He said they can also ask for identification.
“It’s reasonable, you can ask for someone’s ID, et cetera,” Esmail said.
But, he noted, entering someone’s home is a different matter.
“If, in this case, undocumented immigrants—and so if you don’t have a warrant—you can’t go into a person’s home, again, without reasonable
