Jeremy O. Harris, the Tony-nominated playwright of Slave Play, was arrested in Japan last month on suspicion of drug charges, Reuters reported Thursday. Harris was reportedly arrested on November 16 after flying in from the U.K. via Taiwan. He was stopped at Okinawa’s Naha Airport after a customs officer allegedly found 780 milligrams of MDMA in his carry-on bag. He has now been in custody for nearly three weeks.

Harris has been accused of violating Japan’s Customs Act, per the New York Times . It is not yet clear whether charges have been filed. Japan has exceptionally strict drug laws, and he could reportedly face up to seven years in prison if convicted. It’s unclear if Harris has obtained a lawyer, and his reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
