HOLYOKE — The first day of Kwanzaa, a six-day celebration of African American culture, starts Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. in Holyoke City Hall — and everyone is invited.
Kwanzaa honors seven guiding principles, called the Nguzo Saba. Friday’s focus is Umoja, which means “unity.” Theresa Cooper-Gordon, a member of the organizing committee, says this theme is especially important today, as communities work to come together despite divisions.
Umoja urges all to strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and the world African community, Cooper-Gordon said.
Each day of Kwanzaa highlights a different principle, from self-determination and collective responsibility to creativity and faith. The celebration ends Jan. 1 with a big feast called Karamu, bringing people together to share
