COLE COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The city of St. Louis is asking the courts to rule that Mayor Cara Spencer has the exclusive right to appoint the city’s sheriff, according to court documents filed on Friday.
The lawsuit was filed with the Cole County Circuit Court.
“The City has a legally protectible interest in determining and clarifying the mayor’s authority to appoint the sheriff of the City of St. Louis and in preventing unauthorized attempts by other officials to impede the mayor’s authority,” the lawsuit read.
This lawsuit comes after a trial in the civil case to remove the St. Louis City Sheriff, Alfred Montgomery, that was brought by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office. That trial ended on Nov. 25 and, as of publication time, there has not yet been a ruling.
