BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Drivers on Highway 6 may notice workers in full hazmat suits along the roadway in Bryan and College Station this month and into early next year.
The protective gear is part of a required safety process, not a sign of a new emergency or a surprise discovery.
Contractors for the Texas Department of Transportation are now five days into a multi-year project to expand an 11-mile stretch of Highway 6 through Aggieland. As part of that work, TxDOT is starting what is known as lead and asbestos abatement along bridges and structures in the project area.
Where and when the work is happening
TxDOT says the abatement subcontractor began work this week, and the schedule is as follows:
Dec. 1 to 8: Work near Burton Creek, which is north of University Drive on Highway 6
