Comprehensive new DWP anti-fraud measures have become law this week. Legislation aimed at tackling fraud and error within the benefits system has received approval.

The fresh powers enable investigators to withdraw money directly from an individual's bank account.

The Public Authorities (Fraud, Error, and Recovery) Act secured Royal assent in the House of Lords this week. Officials are also being granted new authority to request banking information for millions of benefit claimants, ensuring they qualify for their payments.

The DWP stated the direct deduction powers will target "benefit cheats, fraudsters and debtors who can afford to repay but refuse".
